Propolis is a substance naturally produced by honeybees. When bees fill their honeycomb, they collect pollen from plants and sap from tree leaves and bark. Combining this sap with enzymes from the bees’ saliva produces propolis, which they use to in the inner walls of their nests in order to prevent viruses and stop bacteria from forming. Propolis has a waxy appearance, is very sticky, and is a yellowish green to dark brown resin appearance. A natural anti-biotic, propolis may eliminate bacteria, virus and mold, and can enhance the human immune system. It has been used medicinally since 3000 B.C.
In modern times, propolis created by bees in the Sao Paulo region of Northeast Brazil is considered the best quality due to the excellent flavanoids (vegetable pigments) produced in the local eucalyptus trees. Flavanoids help regulate the immunity levels in the human body, and act as anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agents. Propolis has been used to lower blood pressure, prevent diabetes and treat allergies. Because of its many health benefits, propolis has recently experienced a boom in popularity.
On the forefront of this movement was pioneering Dr. Yasutaka Sakamoto. Noting the high quality of propolis made near Sao Paulo, he started his own bee farm, which today is home to over 3,000 beehives that produce 150 tons of honey, and 12,000 liters of propolis extract annually.
